One of the precursor of street art was an artist named James J. Kilroy who came up with the expression "Kilroy Was Here". This painting caused many controversies, especially in the United States, because it was said to criticize the American Soldier's lack of action during World War II.
Even though the debates faded away near the 1950s, the quote "Kilroy Was Here", is known worldwide. Many people, nowadays, are still drawing this doodle in public spaces.
